I took this guy's picture at the lake this afternoon... some sort of horse fly, I think... ***(Edit: Hmmm... no comments... maybe you would prefer his "incognito" photo - HERE)***
This is an incredible photo. Not sure I would want to hold a horsefly long enough to get ANY picture, let alone a fantastic one like this, but glad you did. Up close it looks more intriguing. (Incognito is cute, too.)
"The main part of interest is of course the tongue, or more correctly the ligula. It is not really anything like a tongue in most insects, being quite indistinct, except in the crickets, bees and in flies. The ligula is extremely well developed in flies, forming what is commonly called the proboscis." It is his mouth parts... kinda gross, eh? to know he's feeling around on your arm (or your food!) with his mouth!
My first response was ewwwww. Then I really looked at the picture and saw the amazing details of that fly. I'm sure each hair and body part have a specific job to do. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to look past the obvious. Ohhhh, I just realized that you do that a lot!
